I ama fan of this author he writes with such passion and has such a talent with Canadian Historical events.
Elixir is the story he wrote around the finding of insulin by Frederick Banting and Charles Best. It carried a lot of information and was very insightful into the lives of those affected.
Ruthie is the daughter of a former professor and her mother now works at University of Toronto as a cleaner. A station that people seemed to think was below her. She was a proud woman who wanted to support her daughter after her husband died in the war.
This however is more the story of Ruthie who became friends with many people including the people who were testing insulin which has saved millions of people. She so became more of an activist but also felt sorry for what she had done and tries to rectify it.
It has a sad element to it as you meet an little girl who is dying from diabetes and the hope that her father has. It brought home the serious nature of this disease and the contributions that we Canadians have made in the lives of millions of people all over the world.
