Description:

As she opened her eyes and took in her surroundings, a feeling of terror ran through her weakened body. She knew exactly where she was. And she knew exactly what was about to happen to her…

When Ella Tate stumbles into Black Rock Falls, her exhausted and bloodied body is a terrifying sight, but not as frightening as the story she has to tell. Ambushed on their way into town when they stopped to help a man by the side of the road, Ella and her friend Sky ran when he pulled a knife on them. But only one of them got away.

As Detective Jenna Alton investigates the case, she looks into the history of missing persons in the town, and uncovers more cases – all young people. All stopped on the same stretch of road into town. All vanished without a trace.

When a distinctive pink sweater belonging to Sky turns up in Black Rock Falls, Jenna follows the trail to a derelict building on the outskirts of town. But she isn’t prepared for what lies behind those doors. Can she stop the killer before more lives are lost?

If you like Robert Dugoni, Karin Slaughter and Rachel Abbott you’ll love this nail-biting thriller from D.K. Hood.

*Each Kane and Alton book can be read as part of the series or as a standalone**

Author Bio:

I’ve always had a wicked sense of humour and was the kid who told the ghost stories around the campfire. I am lucky to have family all over the world and have spent many vacations in places from Paris France to Montana USA and Australia. I use the wonderful memories from these visits to enhance my stories. My interest in the development of forensic science to solve crime goes back many years. I enjoy writing crime, mystery and thrillers. With many stories, waiting for me to write I’ll look forward to sharing many spine-tingling stories with you.

My Thoughts

Having read all of the previous books in this series I still find after each one a sadness that the book has ended.

The series has such depth both in plot and in character development. It is no surprise why this is one of my favourite series.

Going over this book I really enjoyed seeing a dynamic that I didn’t really expect. Kane having just recently returned to Black Rick Falls after a horrific injury but be was lacking some of his memories. It shows that he is not used to taking a step back from the action or relying on other people to protect him or to assist with his work.

What I have always liked about Kane is his ability to thrive in any situation and that he is the consummate professional. Now you see a softer side as well to him which I never expected to really see.

Alton is still the same old fiery personality that we have come to expect. She shows her caring nature more now then trying to hide it behind her mask of sheriff.

The duo is also assisted by Wolf. The third in this trio that while not as in front as the two he still manages to work his way into the story and your heart. He is the ever present person who you need and who helps gel the team together.

The story was very entertaining a d of course that just made the whole thing better. I loved every part of this and found myself transported back to the beautiful realm of Black Rock Falls. The description of where Kane and Alton live has me wanting to go and visit despite the number of crimes that happen in such a small tightknit community.

The small town feel of the book is one of it’s most attractive features as well. Yes lots happens that may not be standard in a small town but the imagery is amazing and you get caught up in the lives and what happens in this small area.

Dealing with subjects such as murder or missing persons but the author always does so with as much tact as is required. In this case alone it seems that it would be hard especially with the past of Alton and Kane.

What a wonderful book and a top series as well. I am eagerly anticipating what will come next.
